Models We Repair for Key and Ignition Problems
If you own a Ford and having trouble with your car keys, ignition barrel or remote, you’re not alone. Ford vehicles are among the most common cars we service across the Sunshine Coast. From ignition barrels that jam to flip keys that break, we’ve seen and fixed it all.
At Sunny Coast Car Keys, we come to you. We’re a fully mobile locksmith that covers the Sunshine Coast from Caloundra to Noosa, Gympie and the Hinterland. With Ford-specific diagnostic tools and specialist equipment to get the job done quickly, we can cut new keys, repair faulty ignitions, reprogram remotes, and get you back on the road without the time or cost of going to the local Ford dealership.
Below are the some of the most common Ford models we work on and the specific key and ignition issues they are known for.
Ford Ranger
PX Ranger (2011 - 2022)
Key and ignition issues in the Ford Ranger are frequent, especially in work vehicles that experience heavy daily use.
One of the most common problems in the PX Ranger (2011 – 2022) is ignition barrel failure. The key may become stiff to turn, or refuse to turn at all, even though the key blade itself appears undamaged. This issue is from internal wear inside the ignition barrel or the key not aligning properly due to worn cuts. In some cases, the barrel will seize completely, making the vehicle undriveable.
Remote flip keys used in PX Rangers are also prone to physical failure. The blade pivot mechanism wears out over time, and the remote section becomes loose or completely detaches from the key. Button failure is another problem, especially if the remote has been dropped a few times or exposed to water. A non-responsive remote can be more than a nuisance, if the immobiliser fails to detect the transponder chip inside the key, the engine won’t start at all.
PJ & PK Ranger (2006 - 2011)
For PJ and PK series Rangers (2006 – 2011), worn key blades and faulty immobiliser chips are the most common issues we see at Sunny Coast Car Keys. We often see situations where a vehicle won’t start or randomly cuts out, only to trace it back to a failing transponder chip inside the key shell.
We carry replacement PX ignition barrels, genuine and aftermarket remote keys, and high-quality key shells for older Ford Rangers. We can repair the ignition on-site and supply fully programmed keys while you wait.

Ford Falcon
AU Falcon (1998 - 2002)
The AU series Falcon (1998 – 2002) had early transponder key systems that can develop communication issues with the immobiliser. If the key or immobiliser antenna coil fails, the car may crank but will not fire, leaving you stranded. A mechanic will likely check basic mechanical faults without ever considering the key.
BF Falcon (2002 - 2008)
Older model Ford Falcons are among the worst offenders when it comes to ignition problems, particularly the BA and BF series (2002 – 2008). It’s common for Falcon owners to explain that their key becomes stuck in the ignition, won’t turn, or won’t return to the “off” position. This is usually due to internal wear in the barrel or a collapsed wafer mechanism. When ignored, these issues can cause total ignition failure, meaning you won’t be able to start or turn off your vehicle without professional help.
FG Falcon (2008 - 2014)
In the FG series Falcons, smart keys and push-button start systems introduced new challenges. When these smart keys fail, the car may not recognise the key even when it’s right next to the start button. Battery failure inside the key, syncing issues or internal chip damage are often to blame. These systems are sensitive, and incorrect reprogramming can lock the system entirely.
We offer ignition barrel rebuilds for stuck or jammed Falcons, full key replacements for lost or broken keys, and smart key reprogramming for FG models with push-button start. If your Falcon isn’t starting, we’ll come to you and fix it on the spot.

Awesome mobile workshop, I stuck my head in the van to have a sticky beak and the set up was super tidy and super professional. Would highly recommend these guys and they'll have my return business in the future. Paul Betar27/07/2025Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I recently had an issue with my Nissan Pathfinder when Kev and Ryan attempted to produce a spare key. In short, through no fault of Kev or Ryan, a problem occurred with the ECU. These boys worked day and night to remedy the situation, at great expense to themselves. They even arranged a courtesy rental car for me to enable me to still have motor vehicle transport, again at significant cost to their business. Now the issue has been resolved perfectly. Thank you, Kev and Ryan, for your exemplary customer service. You just don't find many businesses today with your customer service ethic and commitment. I could not recommend this business highly enough. Put simply, they are wonderful people to deal with. Raymondo Marshall08/07/2025Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. My main key's 'remote lock' stopped, my spare 'remote lock' was a big touchy, my comparison research said I'd have a few stops and unknown costs involved... so kept looking. Found Kev's Keys, sent him a text and quickly had a booking for the next morning. Decided on 2 new keys for the price and job was on time, friendly, and quick. Definately recommend the service to others for 'peace of mind'. Don Moss25/06/2025Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Exceptional service from a true gentleman. Ford Territory (SX, SY, SZ Series)
The Ford Territory shares many of the ignition and remote problems found in the Falcon. Early SX and SY models (2004 – 2011) frequently develop ignition lock faults where the key won’t turn, or the barrel won’t spring back after starting. This is often caused by worn pins or a weak return spring within the ignition housing. If left unchecked, it can lead to full barrel failure or issues with steering lock mechanisms.
Key and remote issues are also very common. The Territory used a separate transponder key and remote fob in earlier models, and a flip key system in later SZ models (2011 – 2016). These keys suffer from worn buttons, loose blades, and failing transponder chips. Even if your key still unlocks the doors, it may not be detected by the car’s immobiliser, preventing the engine from starting.
We regularly supply Territory owners with new flip keys, shell replacements, and replacement ignition barrels. Our services are carried out on-site, with no need to tow the car or visit a Ford dealership.
Ford Focus (LS, LT, LV, LW, LZ Series)
The Ford Focus is another model known for frustrating key and immobiliser problems. The LV and LW series (2008 – 2015) introduced keyless entry and push-button start options in higher models. These keys are expensive to replace at dealerships and commonly suffer from syncing issues. When the car doesn’t recognise the smart key, it may flash a “No Key Detected” error and prevent you from starting the engine altogether.
In the older LS and LT models (2005 – 2009), flip keys with remote central locking tend to break apart at the hinge, or the buttons wear through the rubber membrane. When the key shell fails, the transponder chip can fall out, which means even though the key still turns in the ignition, the vehicle won’t start.
Whether you need a new key cut and programmed or your push-start system diagnosed, we offer fast and cost-effective solutions for all Focus models.
Affordable Ford Ignition Repairs. We Are Cheaper Than the Dealership
Not only do we provide a faster solution, but our service is also more affordable than dealership prices. We specialise in Ford ignition repairs and replacements, meaning we can diagnose and fix the problem quickly, without unnecessary labour costs or markups.
Ford Mondeo (MA, MB, MC, MD Series)
The Ford Mondeo is a less common vehicle on our roads, but we still regularly assist Mondeo owners with key and ignition issues especially in models from 2007 onwards.
Push-to-start faults are the most common complaint in the MC and MD models. These vehicles rely on proximity keys, and when those keys stop communicating with the car’s immobiliser, the result is a completely unresponsive start button. In some cases, the car will unlock, but refuse to start, leading to confusion over whether it’s a key issue or a mechanical failure.
In earlier MA and MB models, broken flip keys and worn transponder chips are the most frequent cause of no-start faults. We also see remote key buttons stop working, requiring a full key re-shell and reprogramming.
We stock replacement smart keys and standard flip keys for the Mondeo, and we can handle all programming and syncing on-site, no towing, no waiting.
Ford Escape (ZB, ZG Series)
Later-model Ford Escapes (2013 onwards) use keyless proximity keys that are prone to failure as they age. Owners may experience problems unlocking the vehicle or starting it with the push-button system. This is often due to battery or circuit board failure inside the key itself or desyncing with the car’s immobiliser system.
Earlier models, like the ZC and ZD series (2007 – 2012), use standard flip keys that can develop issues with worn buttons, broken hinges, or water damage. Once the internal transponder is damaged, the car may crank but not start.
We offer fast key replacement and programming for Ford Escape owners. Whether your key is broken, lost, or no longer working, we can get you back on the road today.
