Mitsubishi Triton Key and Ignition Problems

MN Triton (2009 – 2015)

MN Tritons commonly develop problems with worn transponder keys and remote flip key housings. Many vehicles in this series are used as trade vehicles and experience heavy daily use, which leads to key blades wearing down faster than expected.

One of the most frequent problems we see is the vehicle intermittently failing to recognise the key. Owners often assume the issue is mechanical, but the cause is usually a failing transponder chip inside the plastic key shell or a worn blade no longer aligning correctly inside the ignition barrel.

Flip key hinges also wear over time. When the hinge becomes loose or breaks completely, the internal transponder chip can shift position or become damaged, preventing the vehicle from starting. We can supply replacement keys, re-shell damaged remotes and program new transponder keys onsite.

MQ & MR Triton (2015 – Current)

Later-model MQ and MR Tritons introduced proximity smart key systems in higher-spec models. These keys allow push button start and keyless entry, but when they stop communicating with the vehicle, the engine will not start at all.

A common situation we attend is when the vehicle unlocks normally but displays a “key not detected” warning on the dashboard. This is typically caused by internal smart key failure or syncing issues rather than a vehicle fault.

Because these vehicles are often work utes, owners frequently contact us from job sites needing urgent replacement keys. In most cases we can supply and program new proximity keys onsite without needing dealership involvement.

Mitsubishi ASX Key Problems

The Mitsubishi ASX is one of the most common compact SUVs on the Sunshine Coast, and we regularly assist owners with remote and smart key failures.

Earlier ASX models typically use remote flip keys that suffer from worn button membranes, broken hinge mechanisms and water damaged circuit boards.

Later models introduced proximity smart keys that sometimes stop communicating with the vehicle unexpectedly. When this happens the push button start system will not respond even though the key is nearby.

We stock replacement flip keys and smart keys suitable for most ASX models and can program them during a single visit.

Mitsubishi Outlander Key Replacement Problems

ZG & ZH Outlander (2006 – 2012)

Earlier Mitsubishi Outlanders use standard remote keys with integrated transponder chips. These keys commonly suffer from worn buttons, cracked shells and failed immobiliser chips.

When the chip fails, the vehicle may crank normally but refuse to start. Many mechanics check fuel or battery issues first before discovering the fault is actually inside the key. We regularly replace these keys and supply new remote housings while retaining the original electronics where possible.

ZJ & ZK Outlander (2012 – 2021)

Later Outlander models introduced proximity smart key systems that allow push button start. These keys are convenient but more complex than earlier remote keys and require specialist programming equipment to replace correctly.

One of the most common issues owners report is the vehicle unlocking normally but refusing to start. This usually indicates the immobiliser cannot detect the smart key properly. We can supply replacement proximity keys and program them onsite so the vehicle operates normally again.

Mitsubishi Car Key & Ignition Repair Reviews

At Sunny Coast Car Keys, we provide reliable Mitsubishi key, ignition and immobiliser repairs across the Sunshine Coast, Noosa and Gympie. Affordable Key Repairs for Mitsubishi

Not only do we provide a faster solution, but our service is also more affordable than dealership prices. We specialise in Mitsubishi ignition, door lock and car key replacements and repairs.

Mitsubishi Pajero and Pajero Sport

Pajero (NS, NT, NW, NX Series)

The Pajero remains a popular touring vehicle across Queensland and we regularly attend jobs involving worn ignition keys and failed remote locking systems.

Because many Pajeros travel long distances and operate in harsh environments, key wear happens faster than average. We often see ignition keys that still unlock doors but will not start the vehicle due to transponder chip failure.

We carry replacement keys and can program them onsite.

Pajero Sport (QE, QF Series)

The Pajero Sport uses modern proximity smart keys similar to the Triton platform. These keys can fail internally or lose communication with the vehicle’s immobiliser system.

Owners often report intermittent starting faults before complete failure occurs. Replacing the smart key early usually prevents being stranded later. We can supply replacement proximity keys and complete programming onsite.

Mitsubishi Lancer Key Replacement and Ignition Problems

CJ Lancer (2007 – 2017)

The CJ series Mitsubishi Lancer is one of the most common Lancer models still on the road across the Sunshine Coast, and we regularly assist owners experiencing key recognition and ignition-related faults.

One of the most common issues in CJ Lancers is immobiliser communication failure caused by worn or damaged transponder chips inside the key. Owners often report the engine cranking normally but refusing to start, or the security light remaining illuminated on the dashboard. In many cases the problem is traced back to the key rather than the vehicle itself.

Remote keys in this series are also known to suffer from button membrane wear and cracked housings, especially after years of daily use. When the shell begins to fail, the internal chip can shift position or become damaged, preventing the immobiliser from recognising the key.

We regularly supply replacement remote keys and fully programmed transponder keys for CJ Lancers onsite across the Sunshine Coast.

CH Lancer (2000 – 2007)

Earlier CH Lancer models use one of Mitsubishi’s earlier transponder key systems, and failures in these vehicles are commonly related to aging key electronics or worn ignition keys.

A common situation we attend involves a Lancer that cranks but will not fire, even though the battery and starter motor appear to be working normally. This is often caused by a failing immobiliser chip inside the key or poor communication between the key and the vehicle’s antenna ring around the ignition barrel.

Because these keys are now older, physical wear to the blade itself is also common. When the blade becomes worn, it may no longer align correctly inside the ignition barrel, leading to stiff turning or intermittent starting issues.

We carry replacement keys suitable for CH Lancer models and can cut and program them onsite without needing dealership involvement.

Earlier CE Lancer (1996 – 2003)

Earlier CE series Lancers are still common across the Sunshine Coast and Gympie region and are frequently seen with worn ignition keys after many years of daily use.

Although these models use simpler key systems than later Lancers, ignition barrel wear and damaged key blades are common causes of starting problems. Owners often notice the key becoming harder to turn over time before the ignition eventually refuses to operate smoothly.

We can cut replacement keys to suit worn originals and restore reliable ignition operation during a single mobile visit in most situations.
